Last night I got a mysterious phone call from a person whose voice I didn’t recognize.
The called simply said “it’s on the porch, Merry Christmas.” Then they hung up before I could even ask who they were. Now a million things raced into my brain none of them good. First I called home no answer. Then I called my wife, she was out Christmas shopping. She had gotten the exact same phone call as well. We were both a bit concerned. No were both freaking out.
We called my brother in-law who lives a couple of blocks away and he agreed to come over and inspect the mystery package. Basically we were sending him into ground zero in case it was al-Qa'ida who left it there.
He called back and informed us there was a nicely wrapped box with a card on the porch. Those Dastardly clever devils exploiting a Christian holiday to wipe out a middle class mid western family for a political statement! We told him to leave it there “save your self we will risk our lives.” Okay, my wife risked hers I was at work but still. When my wife returned home from her shopping trip she parked across the street and left the kids in the car. She carefully took the package and read the card.
The card read To a wonderful family who gives so much, God bless you and Merry Christmas. She scanned the card closely all the words were spelled correctly. It wasn’t revenge from the Nigerians for my reluctance to aid them in their financial endeavors. She opened the box slowly while I at work checked the Internet to confirm that the Una bomber Ted Kaczynski was not at large.
Waiting desperately for a phone call I watched out the window of my place of business on the 30th floor of the Ruan Center to see if my wife possible pass by my window on her way into orbit. Finally she called and there was a calmed relief in her voice as she said that some anonymous party had left us a Wii for Christmas.
Secret Santa or Government agent planting a listening device in out quiet mid western home you be the judge.
On a serious note, who ever it was. Family member, friend, co-worker, Member of our church family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have made this truly a remarkable Christmas with a little magical mystery.
To all of you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Todd
